Description Title of Position: ASSISTANT VESSEL MANAGER

Responsible for assisting the Vessel Manager with planning and directing all production and support operations on the processing vessel; including planning and forecasting for production, hiring and retention of staff, training and coaching of key staff on company standards, interfacing with corporate fleet and operation departments to ensure that location is on target for production goals and provides corporate office with production, accounting and all other necessary administrative support. This position is expected to relieve the vessel manager and/or department managers as needed throughout the season. The Assistant Vessel Manager position is a salaried exempt role that reports to the Westward Operations Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervises the activities and personnel engaged in the seafood production operations.
Oversees and participates in the development and achievement of performance, efficiency, and product quality standards. Provides direction and oversight to: production manager, production foreman, office manager, on-site safety manager, chief engineer, and quality control manager regarding the coordination of production operating standards with overall company objectives.
Manages pre- and post-season projects and planning.
Assists in the recruitment, training and retention of key staff.
Maintains effective daily communication with corporate management and the sales department ensuring that daily production, inventory and logistics data are tracked and shared.
Works with internal compliance departments to ensure that all company standards regarding safety, HR, environmental, etc. are being met consistently; this will also include the ongoing training of location personnel.
Monitors fuel usage, fuel reports and schedules fuel deliveries to ensure sufficient fuel resources to meet the demands of the operation.
Assists with the ordering of equipment, parts and supplies through the purchasing department and arranges the freight shipment north and south bound between Seattle and vessel location.
Ensures compliance with and reporting to multiple regulating entities in areas of air quality (ODC), EPA, OSHA, HACCP, USDC, APDES.
Works with the chief engineer on preventative maintenance procedures and plans the repair of machines and equipment to minimize downtime.
Assists with maintaining regular communication with the fishing and tender fleet to facilitate steady availability of quality fish.
Upholds conformance with employment policies, company problem solving procedures, the issuance of warnings, and the administration of company policies.
Administers pay and job assignments fairly, legally and within guidelines established by the human resource department.
Communicates and enforces established quality standards for all products and grades; develops and implements methods to measure, monitor and test such standards.
Trains, coaches and evaluates department managers leading by example, demonstrating leadership skills and striving toward continuous improvement.
Takes a personal interest in all reports of injury occurring in the production areas, initiates investigation when appropriate and addresses all unsafe conditions immediately.
Encourages employee communications and an open door policy through team meetings and one-on-one interactions.
Stays abreast of production and personnel management trends by attending company-sponsored training programs and/or outside training opportunities.
Handles all personnel matters with confidentiality, sensitivity and in accordance with company and legal guidelines.
Other duties as assigned. Requirements Skill and experience required:
Minimum 5 years in a seafood production environment with at least three years in a management role.
In depth knowledge of production principles, techniques and related equipment.
Knowledge of commercial fishing vessel operations.
Experience working in a highly-regulated food manufacturing industry.
Practical work experience in planning, supervision, cost and budget control and quality assurance.
High aptitude for problem solving and troubleshooting.
Ability to motivate others and build high production teams through exemplary leadership.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Solid computer skills in a Windows operating environment.
Must be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations.
Ability to work in remote Alaska, onboard a vessel, for approximately 6-8 months out of the year. Some of this time may be spent at other Icicle facilities in addition to the Gordon Jensen, depending on need. The work schedule in Alaska requires long hours, up to 16-hours per day and 7 days per week. For the balance of the year, the assistant vessel managers work is based in the Seattle corporate office engaged in planning, budgeting, and project-related work.
The Gordon Jensen is a motorized processing vessel that is able to maintain a year-round operation, consisting of a 195 employee workforce that is engaged in the production of cod, herring, and all species of Pacific Salmon. The vessel operates in Dutch Harbor, Bristol Bay, Prince William Sound, Kodiak, and SE Alaska.
